“When I was nine years old my parents bought me a dog. He was my best friend. Then one day he broke his hip bone playing with a bigger dog. We took him to the veterinarian and he said he could fix him but he couldn’t. The metal plate kept coming off and he had to operate two more times before we decided to put him down. I cried for weeks. I remember thinking that if I had made the choice to put him down in the beginning, he wouldn’t have had to suffer so much. That’s when I first thought about life and death.”
